Established
in 1987, the Oakland Runnin' Rebels/Student Athletic Academy is a youth
non-profit organization. The core mission and vision of the organization
is to help troubled or at-risk youths through the daily challenges in their
lives. This mission is accomplished by strengthening their self-esteem,
encouraging them to dream and exposing them to a world outside of their
own neighborhoods. A keen focus on academics is the tool used to accomplish
the mission of the ORR/SAA, basketball is the platform used to promote the
vision. The mentoring program builds value and character in our program
participants.
The "Student Athlete Academy" aspect of the program further emphasizes
the commitment to a higher education for the program participants. We require,
of all program participants, a GPA minimum for entry of a 2.5. Under the
guidance of our tutors and coaching staff, we raise the bar on the GPA requirement
annually. We encourage our players to use the tutoring and mentoring programs,
offered through the club, as an enhancement to their academic curriculum.
Some of the clubs alumni have attended Yale University, UC-Santa Barbara,
Saint Mary's College, San Jose State University, University Of Nevada-Reno,
Oregon State and Washington State as well as other colleges and universities
throughout the country. The Oakland Runnin' Rebels/Student Athlete Academy
helps the Bay Area Youth fight back the call from the mean streets.
